Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story light-colored house with a snow-covered roof stands alone on a flat snow-covered field under a pale gray sky, with a weathered wooden post-and-rail fence partly buried in snow in the foreground.

Sizing a boiler for this house is not a generic calculation. Homes in Ellsworth County, KS run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. A burner and heat exchanger cycling through that kind of demand accumulate wear at a pace that exposes any weakness in the original install, whether that is an undersized unit working harder than it should or a poorly fitted system losing efficiency early. A contractor quoting a replacement here has to establish the right output for the load before anything else, because getting that wrong costs the homeowner in repairs before the warranty is out.

Ductwork and electrical service installed for one heating system and later pressed into service for another carry the decisions of whoever adapted them. Those decisions are what a contractor prices around when a new boiler goes in. Half the homes in Ellsworth County, Kansas were built in 1958 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Housing built across that era was typically ducted and wired for equipment that has since been replaced at least once, and each replacement left its own adjustments. The question a contractor has to answer before quoting is whether those accumulated adjustments will carry a new system or whether the runs and panels have to be brought in line with what the new unit actually draws.

What Gets Installed With a New Boiler

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing a boiler with a flue pipe, orange heating pipes running to radiators, and simple furniture in three rooms under a tiled roof.

The boiler itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the unit that heats water and sends it out through the system. Alongside it, the expansion tank and pressure relief valve mount close to the boiler body, giving the system room to handle pressure changes safely.

From the boiler, supply and return pipes run through the house to the heat emitters, which are radiators or radiant floor loops depending on the setup. A circulator pump, typically mounted on the return line near the boiler, moves the heated water through those pipes and back again.

The drawing shows a representative layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly which components apply to this house and how they will be configured.
