Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story light-colored house with a gabled roof stands alone in a flat snow-covered field under a pale overcast sky, with a wooden post-and-rail fence and drifted snow in the foreground.

Sizing a boiler for this house starts with understanding how hard the burner actually runs. Homes in Lyon County, KS run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. A burner cycling through that much of the calendar puts real strain on the ignition system and heat exchanger, and a unit that is undersized for the load shows degradation on those components well before its rated service life. A contractor quoting a replacement here prices the equipment for what the season demands, not for a median load.

Ductwork laid down for a gravity furnace or a steam system carries different dimensions, different routing, and different pressure assumptions than what a modern boiler requires. Half the homes in Lyon County, Kansas were built in 1970 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing a new boiler here has to assess that existing infrastructure before the equipment selection means anything, because duct runs that served one system may restrict airflow or require modification to serve the next. The boiler itself is the smaller variable. What the house already contains is where the job gets defined.

What Gets Installed With a New Boiler

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing a boiler connected by orange pipes to radiators in several rooms furnished with a sofa, bed and cabinets, under a dark shingled roof with a flue pipe.

The boiler itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the heat source for the whole system. A contractor mounts it to the floor or wall, connects it to the gas or oil supply, and ties it into the home's water lines. Alongside it goes the expansion tank, which absorbs pressure changes as water heats and cools.

From the boiler, supply pipes run through the house to the heat emitters, which are either radiators or baseboard units mounted along exterior walls in each room. A circulator pump, fitted close to the boiler, moves hot water through that loop. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system fires.

The drawing shows the general layout of a boiler system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.

Severe Weather Events in Lyon County

Weather puts direct pressure on heating equipment: hard winters and temperature swings force boilers to run harder and longer, wearing components faster than in milder climates. How much stress a boiler takes over its life is a local question, and Lyon County's weather record is part of that answer.
