Sizing a boiler for Johnson County means accounting for a burner and heat exchanger that spend the better part of every year working. Homes in Johnson County, KS run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. The ignition system cycles repeatedly across those months, and a unit that was undersized or poorly commissioned at the start compounds that wear rather than simply reflecting it. A contractor quoting a new installation here runs a proper load calculation before specifying equipment, because a boiler that is a size too small runs longer per cycle and stresses the heat exchanger earlier than it should.

Ductwork laid out for a previous generation of heating equipment shapes what a boiler installation runs into before a single new component goes in. Half the homes in Johnson County, Kansas were built in 1989 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). In stock that old, the distribution layout was sized and routed for a different system, and a contractor quoting a new boiler has to read what is already in the walls and floors before the equipment can even be specified. Electrical service is a secondary check. The duct runs are where the job either fits or does not.

What Gets Installed With a New Boiler

The boiler itself sits in a utility space, basement, or mechanical room and is the heart of the system. A contractor mounts it against a wall or floor, connects it to a fuel supply or electrical source, and ties it into the home's water lines. This is the unit that heats the water that travels through the rest of the system.

From the boiler, pipes run to radiators, baseboard units, or radiant floor loops positioned throughout the living spaces. A circulator pump, usually mounted close to the boiler, moves the heated water along those pipes. An expansion tank, pressure relief valve, and thermostat round out the installation and give the system control and safety.

The drawing shows a typical boiler system layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly which components and configurations apply to your home.
