Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story light-colored house with snow-covered roofs stands beyond a snow-filled field, with a weathered wooden post-and-rail fence half buried in drifts in the foreground under an overcast, hazy sky.

Sizing and installation quality are not abstract concerns for a boiler here. Homes in Wilson County, KS run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. The burner cycles through most of the calendar, and so does the ignition system, the heat exchanger, and every seal in the assembly. A boiler that was undersized at installation, or set up with a sloppy combustion air supply, will show stress on those components sooner than the same machine running in a place with less winter. A contractor quoting a new install has to get the load calculation right the first time, because the equipment will not have enough idle time to hide the consequences of getting it wrong.

Ductwork laid in for an earlier generation of heating equipment was sized and routed around whatever that equipment needed, and a modern boiler does not inherit those assumptions for free. Half the homes in Wilson County, Kansas were built in 1965 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a new boiler installation here has to look at what the existing distribution system will actually carry before the equipment selection means anything. Duct runs that were right for the original system may need rerouting, resizing, or sealing before a new unit can do its job. The boiler goes in last, not first.

What Gets Installed With a New Boiler

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing a boiler with a flue pipe through the roof, orange heating pipes running through rooms to radiators, and simple grey furniture.

The boiler itself sits in a utility area, most often a basement or mechanical closet, and is the unit that heats the water the system runs on. Paired with it are the expansion tank, which absorbs pressure as the water heats, and the circulator pump, which moves the heated water out through the pipes.

From the boiler, supply pipes run to the heat emitters, which are either radiators or radiant floor loops depending on what the house calls for. A thermostat mounts on a wall in the living space and tells the system when to fire. The pressure and temperature gauges, along with the relief valve, sit at or near the boiler itself.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly which components apply to this house.
